Our Aim

Ever since properly organised fire brigades came into existence there have been what the Americans call "fire buffs", that is, members of the public who have a serious interest in the fire service and wanted to know more about all its aspects.

In The 19th Century, volunteer or "gentlemen" fire brigades were quite common, and it was considered a great honour to be a member. This was amateur firemanship, but in many cases the brigades were well equipped and highly efficient.

It was not until 1963, however that the Fire brigade Society was formed in Manchester. Since then the society has grown into an international organisation with members in places as far away as the USA, Australia and Africa.

Members come from all walks of life, and it is significant that the number of junior members is a very small proportion of the total membership. There are office workers, businessmen, bus drivers, students, members from the Ambulance, Police and of course, the Fire Brigade.

They all have one thing in common - they are all ENTHUSIASTS. They are, of course, not all interested in the whole range of fire brigade activities. Some make a study of old manuals and steamers, others modern appliances, or the architecture and layout of fire stations. Some members are more interested in industrial brigades, others make a study of mobilisation and control room activities. Then there are those members whose main interest is in the making of scale model appliances.

The society arranges visits to fire stations, airport fire services, and the manufacturers of fire appliances. Regular monthly meetings are held at a number of centres throughout the country.

Membership is available to anyone interested in ANY aspect of the fire service.

The main objectives of the society are to promote and foster interest in fire brigades and their organisation, stations and appliances and to enable members to enlarge and develop their knowledge of all aspects of the fire service. In other words, we are members of the public who take an intelligent and keen interest in a vital public service. The principle activity of members is the exchange of photographs and general information about appliance fleets, stations and general fire brigade affairs, both past and present. This is done partly through the medium of our illustrated journal
"Fire Cover" and by members corresponding with each other.
